Default Canon Makes a Huge Announcement

News Flash 01/26/10 6:30pm PST/1430 GMT:

Not to be outdone by Panasonic, Canon is set to announce at least 4 new cameras prior to PMA. The rumor seems strong, that there will be a Canon brand EVIL camera! There will be a mirror-less EVIL camera from Canon exhibited at PMA. EVIL stands for an Electronic Viewfinder/Interchangeable Lenses camera.

The new EVIL camera will use the imager from the Canon 7D, but will have a reduced image cirle of 18mm to accomodate zoom lenses. The imager will be at or near the APS-C imager. Initially there will be three Canon branded lenses: a 15mm Pancake type lens, a 12-33mm short range Kit Lens, and a 36-166mm mid range telephoto lens. Pundits speculate that the Canon EVIL camera will actually be smaller than the existing Pansonic G series m4/3 cameras.

There will be an adapter offered with the new EVIL camera that will allow the use of existing EF and EF-S lenses. Those EF and Ef-S lens would have a 2.4X multipler. The new EVIL camera will also feature 720p, 30fps video and have a fully articulated LCD screen.

The new Canon 60D will feature: an articulating LCD screen, a heavy duty all metal body similar to the existing 50D model. It will use an upgraded 15.1, APS-c size imager, 720p/1080p video at 30fps, an electronic leveling device, a whole new battery, and battery grip. It will be priced around $(US)1190.00.

The new 550D/600D cameras will also have an articulating LCD screen, a body actually smaller than the existing 500D DSLR camera, perhaps more like the Pentax Kx DSLR camera. These two new cameras will utilize an upgraded 15.1mp imager APS-C imager, 720p video at 30 fps. The list price will be around $(US) 800.00. There is strong speculation that the existing Canon XS and XDi will be replaced by the new 550D and 600D cameras

All of these announcements will make for an exciting PMA show.Sarah Joyce

very strange that the new rebels will not have 1080, while the t1i does.

I think they will be replacing the XSi and the XS with the 2 new rebels. That makes sense not putting in 1080, and if the iso will be at 3200 or 6400, that would confirm the XSi and XS will be replace. Since the XS line has been out for 2 years it make even more sense.

Think we will be seeing an upgrade to the D5000 and D3000, if this is the tread.

i think that is it Shoturtle, this new model is not replacing the T1i, but giving a smaller alternative with an articulating LCD. and to differentiate it, they went with the 720p video. well that would be my guess.

I would buy that EVIL if my EF/EFs lenses fit on it, in a heartbeat. well provided it was reasonable in price.

Shutterbug,

The question that comes up is, is the canon evil going up against the G1 and GH1 and NX, and not the GF1 and EPens.

I've no idea. I just copied the info off that site ( and referenced it ) incase it offered more insight to the use of EF Lenses.
It certainly sounds interesting. Can't wait too see it.

Shoturtle-

I would say that Canon has decided that the m4/3 and near m4/3 market niche is an area where they have no camera, so this seems to be a logical addition. Also as a "near m4/3" camera, they do not have to buy into the m4/3 consortium.
