Thanks so much for the guidance. I'm going to Future Shop and Best Buy tomorrow and I will check out what they have. I will make a list of what I like and post back here for more advice if no one minds!
I have a feeling I will end up with a Canon but who knows?

But I would honestly wait till april unless you really need the camera now. Price will be dropping once the new stuff comes out.

While not mentioned, the best camera that meets your description is the Sigma DP2. It has no zoom, but has the image quality of a dSLR. It can be used completely automatically, or completely manually. It's small and inconspicious, Easy to use as a P&S, and equally easy to use manually.

You can certainly get a cheaper machine, but this camera will definitely allow you to learn all aspects of photography.
