Found a blog where a guy took a GF1 around the Himalayas. He put a UV filter on the lens, partly to protect it while hiking.

If you have such a filter on does the lens cap still need to go on (in fact does it even fit?). I was wondering if, by using a filter, I could protect the lens while being ready to shoot without messing about taking a cap off...

Yes they have the filter for the GF1, depends on the lens you get. I think it is a 40.5mm with the standard zoom.

Just to let everyone who's helped know, I picked up a GF1 with 20mm pancake this afternoon

Only taken a couple of pics (waiting for the battery to charge now) but amazed with the quality and feel of the images even just leaving it on auto. Can't wait to start using it in anger....
