The pentax k-x is the best in that department, it is slightly better imagine quality then the canon T1i. But the AF system of the canon will let you get a AF lock when the K-x and D5000 can not. But for the cost of the K-x with 2 lens at about 700 dollar, you will spend 730 dollars just with for 1 lens with the T1i.

The T1i gives you more lens option the both the d5000 and the pentax k-x.

The K-x is the value leader that will also meet your need of low light.

i just want to reiterate my point that if you continue thinking about getting the D5000 and you want to use a 50 1.8, you cannot. You will have to upgrade to the 50 1.4 AF-S or the 35 1.8 AF-S. the cheap 50 1.8 from nikon does not have a focus motor, and the d5000 body doesn't autofocus lenses without one.

Thanks Hards80, I did see that. I like most things about the Nikon except for that, though really all I know is that my friends (who mainly have Canons) shoot mostly with their 50 1.8 lens and speak highly of it. If there is an equivalent lens that isn't too terribly expensive then that would work for me as well.

I want a camera that has good lens options at the 300 and under price point.

There is no 100 dollar option with that ability for the nikon d5000 or d3000. The closest will be a 35mm 1.8, but it is 2.5 time more about 250 dollars.

The canon ef 70-300mm IS USM is a really nice lens, and very sharp at the long end. It is about 500 dollars. But if you are looking for a less expensive option the ef-s 55-250mm IS is not bad, not as fast in the focus. But you can check out the sharpness at my heliport thread. I have both lens. So no bias toward either.

I also shoot the pentax k-x, and it's DAL 55-300mm is a very good at 300mm with the 2 lens kit zoom. The DA 55-300mm a nicer option then the DAL 55-300mm.
