Muse,

I got that hood in for the 55-300, and it works just fine, no fit issue.

That is, this one:

Is that right?

What kind of hoods is better? They have rubber ones at Amazon for ~$6, but they say they don't provide much protection except from light.

I received my hood for the 18-55mm from the place you linked me to, fotodiox_gear at eBay and it fits fine. Nice that the cap fits on the reversed hood for storage. I think the camera looks great with it on. Haven't received the hood for the 55-300mm yet, coming from Asia.

I was looking at bags online, one at the flea market. I have a "bag" (more a case, with zippers, pockets, a flap) that I've had my camcorder in for years, but I seldom use the camcorder. It's OK for the K-x kit, but don't know if it would fit if I had the 55-300mm attached to the body. I'd never be able to get a 3rd lens in there (e.g. the Tamron 28-75mm f2.8 I'd like to get eventually). Of course, usually I won't need 3 lenses with me.

My brother has only 3 lens the 18-55, 55-300, and the fa 50 1.4. That is pretty much covers all his need with action, and low light. It all fits in a lowepro messenger camera bag for 35 dollars. And still have room for his clean kit, filters, and wallet.

My husband and I will be receiving our pentax k-x in the mail on Monday, and have a few questions about accessories. On craigslist someone is selling an old 35mm Pentax camera that has a couple of sigma lenses and a flash unit. We were just wondering if the flash unit will work on the k-x. It is the Promaster FTD 7000M Flash Unit. Will this work? The lenses he is selling are the Sigma 28-105mm, f/2.8 and the Sigma 100-300mm, f/4. Any thoughts?

for the 55-300mm you will need the pentax ph-rbg for 58mm. You will not be able to find this hood, and will need to pay for the real deal at a online shop or 1/2 price for a aftermarket at adorama or bhphoto

Also a circular polarizer is a good accessory to have.
I lost my lens hood for my Pentax 16-45.

New ones from Pentax Canada are $ 75.

I would love to find a source that has them cheaper. I did try a rubber universal lens hood , but it vignettes at 16-19 mm.

The 18-55 mm kit lens that came standard with my Pentax KM does not have a lens hood. This is the way it comes from the factory .

It also is one of those lens with a plastic lens mount.

I wasn't very happy with the fact that it had neither a lens hood or a metal lens mount, but unfortunately couldn't buy just a KM body.

I don't use it as I have a 16-45 and a 12-24mm. For wide angle work I use my 16-45 on my KM and 12-24mm on my K10D.

My 18-55 with out a lens hood and with a plastic lens mount...sits unmourned and unloved in my lens bag.

Yes. shoturtle pointed that out to me in the very next post in this thread, back in March:
