Capetown is not that bad, but johannesburg is not as safe for tourist. I do not know where newcastle is flying into. But added care should be taken. Even though SA is a first world country. The vast majority of the population is still well below the world poverty line, and a vast majority of the people still lives in the townships. So it is a good idea to add the extra care.

Another option, of course, is for newcastle77 to FedEx his gear to his hotel, and then FedEx it back. That bypasses both the checked baggage and the carry-on luggage problem.

There is a problem with that also, custom duties and headaches.
