Default Is the Canon XSi still a good option?

I'm searching for my first DSL and am strongly considering the Canon XSi. I've read lots of reviews and found a ton of useful info within this forum. Thank you all for your willingness to share your knowledge with others.

My one hesitation is that the XSi is already about 2 years old and I'm not familiar with how Canon releases new products. So, can someone clarify where the XSi is in its product lifecycle? That is, do we expect a newer XS model to come soon? Or, was the T1i the "replacement" of the XSi?

I'm just trying to avoid making this purchase only to discover that this model is replaced a month later or whatever.

Also, I called my local Frys to see what they had in stock, they informed me that they are out and that the XSi has been "discountinued"...thus my concern.

I think that the t2i and t1i will replace the xsi and xs in the near feature.

But the XSi is still an excellent camera. And may be very well suited for you needs if we know what you like to photograph.

The Apple website also lists the XSi as discontinued. Interesting.

I am sure canon is going to discontinue it soon. They are running rebates on the XS and I have no doubt that the XSi is the next one they rebate.

At the pace technology evolves these days, a two-year old camera can be considered ancient. Yes, you might save some money but you will be replacing it a lot sooner. You don't need to buy the latest and greatest so one model behind is usually a good way to go. I suggest the T1i instead.

If you want a Canon, you might as well get the T1i. Double the mpix

Not quite. The T1i is 15MP while the XSi is 12MP. The things that distinguish one from the other are the 25% increase in resolution, the ability to record video, and the higher ISO settings available on the T1i.
