Default Looking for a $200-$300 Sony W-55 replacement, advice please.

I am looking for a replacement for the W-55 that is still serving us well.

I am traveling to Europe soon, and also I find myself wanting a little more wide angle and xoom than the current camera when photographing family.

I was looking at the W-290 (optic issues), W-350 (no info), H-20 (would like more wide angle).

FWIW, the specs. on the W-55 (that I find lacking) are:
  • Focal Length : 6.3 -18.9mm
  • 35mm Equivalent : 38 - 114 mm
I have seen some mention about the H-55 and ZS3/ZS5, the ZS5 looks nice.

Some of the features I would like are:

- Good wide angle and xoom optics and good picture of course (edit...5"x7"max)
- $200-250 price, $300 max. (would like $300 max. with an extra battery)
- Replacement for carrying my son's FlipHD when I travel (with xoom lens, 720p probably is OK)
- May display on HDTV
- Durable, well built
- Point and shoot with a good menu system, I don't care for touch-screens
- Reasonable priced battery (I have 2 "new" Sony G series batteries btw)

Nice to have would be:

- Small
- Reasonably priced waterproof housing (10-20 ft)
- CCD (does the CMOS have issues for video usage?)
- Good flash
- Good macro (for nature shots)
- Xoom control on top, rather than back

Am I asking for too much?

Thanks!

Welcome to the Forum We're delighted you dropped by.

The best buys in your price range are with Panasonic ZS3, ZS1,and ZR-1

Thank you for the welcome! Great forum.

The ZS1 and ZR-1 appear to be coming in at roughly $200, which is nice, and the ZS3 and ZS5 around $270 on a popular internet shopping site. And I just see a ZR3 at around $270 if it is even shipping yet.

I'm going to try to wade through some specs. now. Is their a reason the ZS5 was left off of the list? Also, what differentiates the ZR-1 from the ZS series?

Also, I have a Panny Blu-ray currently and a Panny HDTV on the way, so it appears a Panny camera would interface well and allow remote control.

Thanks!

Yes, Panasonic cameras interface nicely with Panasonic TV's.

The ZS series replaced the ZR1. But the ZR1 was a great camera. I feel the ZS1 is better than the ZS5. 14mps have reduced the image quality.

Thanks for the info.

I found 16 ZS3's at the local Costco for $260 plus tax and grabbed one.

It comes with a 2GB (big whoop) card and a little carry case too, and 90 day return policy.

On the high end of my range, but it looks like a great camera and if the HD video is good, I can just carry one camera.

I'm going to take it out tomorrow and play some. Yeah!

Congratulations on your new camera. With Costco return policy you are nicely protected.
