Default First Point and Shoot for 12 year old girl

Hi all,

First post so be gentle!

I was wondering if you can give me some advice regarding a point and shoot for my 12 year old (coming on 21!!). She wants one for her 13th birthday in July. Here are her requirements:

Fits in her small bag or pocket easily (very important)
Looks cool (important)
Has a useable flash (quite important)
Has video with audio
Has easy modes to select
Decent sized screen on the back

My requirements are
Cost less than 100 (ish)
Relatively robust
Good picture quality (only because I can’t bring myself to buy a poor image quality camera!)
Not a long shutter lag

She wants to use it with her friends just to take pictures indoors and outdoors, she is not that pre-occupied with picture quality although I am sure she will notice if it’s not that good.

Hope you can help as I am not up to speed with the point and shoot market!

Oh by the way I'm in the UK!

Thank you.

I am not an expert, but I have been searching for info on a new camera for me, and I just bought one for my daughter. I found this article here: http://www.steves-digicams.com/knowl...---part-1.html which was excellent. I bought the Top Pick: Canon Powershot A1100 IS for her. I can let you know in a day or so how the pics turn out - though I am sure there are experts here who can help you faster :-)

The Canon A1100 is a good selection.

The kodak m1093 does shoot hd video, and as video is a requirement. It may be a bit better choice then the canon with only standard video.

TX5 is a nice camera but out of the 100pound range

I agree with shoturtle-

The Kodak M1093 would be the best choice, followed by the Canon A-1100.

Wow, thank you all for your replies. I have just been searching out good prices for each model. I forgot Kodak still made cameras! I would probably prefer the Canon but i think my daughter would prefer the look of the Kodak as it looks slimmer. Tomorrow I will go and look in some shops to get hands on on both these models.

Thanks again.
