Default Which camera should I buy Canon SX120IS vs. Olympus Stylus 9000

I am confused between two models:
Canon SX120IS vs. Olympus Stylus 9000
Which camera should I buy?
I am getting Canon SX120IS for 199$ (Including 4 GB memory card)
and Stylus 9000 for 190$ (Including 8 GB Memory card)

I am a amateur photographer
AA batteries is not a major concern for me.
I am looking for a good zoom (more than 7x optical zoom)
10MP+ camera for taking family snaps, scenery pics, party pics, low light pics
Would like good auto mode (with atleast some manual control)
My budget is strict 200$ with memory stick included
Image quality is important to me (sharpness, color processing, scene detection, smile detection, anti blur, anti shake features)

I would like to buy a camera which shoots great pics with minimal settings or fuss but which also provides manual control for shooting some good pics if needed

Currently I have shortlisted Canon SX120IS and Olympus Stylus 9000
with SX120IS having an edge due to sharpness of its images (checked the images at photographyblog)

My friend has SX110 and has givein great reviews about the camera.

I am confused as 9000 has wide angle but fails on sharpness of images, also low light photos are not as good as compared to SX120IS

Could you please compare the two cameras and also give suggestions for any other camera of similar price range and type. Also please rate the cameras which I should buy.

Thanks in advance for the help.

Welcome to the Forum. We're delighted you dropped by.

The Canon SX-120 is clearly the better camera. The Olympus Stylus 9000 has not received good professional reviews and you usually find it heavily discounted. In addition most user reports are not 100% positive as well.

I would guess that you are not a resident of the USA, but you have not listed your location, so I could be wrong. If you are looking for a wide angle, take a look at the Panasonic ZR1. Here in the USA, the ZR1 is selling for $(US)170.00.

The ZR1 has 8X optical zoom (25mm to 200mm), is pleasantly small and pocket-able and does HD video.

I find the SX120 to be very slow between shots and reviews do too. My family hates me to take pictures with it and I've missed important events because it is so slow.
I use the eneloop batteries too.

Thanks Sarah and J320 for your replies. It will definitely help me in making a informed decision. I am a resident of India but my brother is going to get a camera for me from USA.

I will defintiely consider ZR1 lets see. Sarah can you please give details of stores where ZR1 is available for 170$.

Regards,
Amit

amit-

There is a nation-wide chain of stores in the USA called Costco stores. That is where you will find the ZR1 for $170.00.
