Default Need to replace my Canon A610!

Hi all, I am looking to replace my A610 which died on me. I have a $300 budget and would like at least a 28mm wide angle and IQ to be as good or better than my old A610. I have been researching online for a few days now but can't find anything. Any suggestions? Please help!

hyperups-

Welcome to the Forum. We're delighted that you dropped by.

If you are living in the USA, one of the best buys right now is the Panasonic ZR1. Costco has it for $170.00, plus some Costco stores are including a free case and a memory card. It has 12mp, 8X Optical zoom (25mm to 200mm) and can do HD video, allowing zooming while filming.

If you want better low light capability, there is the Canon S-90, but that price is around $360.00

Thanks for the quick reply Sarah! I am in the US. I don't know if you've used the A610 but is the ZR1 comparable in photo quality? How does the ZR1 compare to the SX120 in photo quality? Is there anything like the ZR1 but with a better flash? The S90 might be a little out of my range. Thanks for your help!

By the way, pocketability is not an issue really.

hyperups-

Yes, I have owned and extensively used both the Canon A-610 and SX-120.

The image quality of the Panasonic ZR1 is as good as, and better, than either the Canon A-610 or the SX-120 cameras. The Flash Range ( the distance between the camera and the subject, measured in feet) for the ZR-1 is nominally 8 feet.

However the Flash Range can easily be extended to 20 feet by using an accessory Slave Flash unit costing less than $20.00. I have attached a photo showing my ZR1 and the Slave Flash that I use to extend the effective Flash Range.
