Default Good point and shoot for my son

I am looking for a good point and shoot camera for my son, what do you all suggest. I am sure that it will be used as an everyday camera. He is graduating from High School in a few weeks.

BigDaddy-

We don't mean to be repetitive but can we have at least the budget for this purchase, and an idea about the kind of photos he will be taking, please.

Lacking that information, let's assume a $200 or less budget and a compact zoom camera.

J & R has the Panasonic ZS1 on sale at $(US) 179.00 plus shipping. The ZS1 has 12X optical zoom (25mm to 300mm) with 10mp, and Video that allow zooming while filming. It is a tight fit, but it is coat or jacket size pocket-able.

Amazon has the Panasonic ZR1 on sale at $(US)185.00, plus shipping. The ZR1 has 8X optical zoom (25mm to 200mm) with 12mp, upgrade imager and IS system with HD video that does allow zooming while filming. It is measurably smaller physical size than the ZS1 and can go into a jeans pocket.

Not sure if he has much interest, YET. I just thought it would be nice for him to have a nice camera of his own. It would be used as an all around camera. Not anything specific. My budget is right around $200, but I would be willing to go higher if there is something better that costs a little more then the $200.

BigDaddy

We have provided two good suggestions. You won't do any better by even increasing the "budget" to $(US)270.00.

I can agree that the ZR1 (and by extension the ZS1 by using same sensor, similar lens) would be great choices.

The ZR1 has HD video and a smaller size.

The ZS1 has a longer lens.

take your pick, can't go wrong.

Thanks everyone! I will pick one of those 2. Sorry for the dumb question, Sarah, but what is J&R? Is that a website?

BigDaddy-

"J & R" is short for J & R Music and Video, www.jr.com
