Default Compact P&S sub $200

Hi all,

I am looking for a compact (smaller the better) P&S for random use.. never owned a digital camera and figured it's about time.

I'd like something that takes HD video, is ~$200 or less, decent zoom and of course, the best picture quality I can get. Also, fast response time would be nice - I can't stand those cameras that take forever to take the picture.

I've been browsing around here and found a few that look nice.. any thoughts on these, or any others?

1. Panasonic Lumix DMC-ZS1 - 10mp, 12x zoom, $200
2. Canon PowerShot SD940 IS - 12mp, 4x zoom, $200
3. Samsung TL320 - 12mp, 5x zoom, $200

I like the idea of 12x zoom - seems like I could get some use out of that at sporting events or whatever, but is this camera better than the other two regardless of the zoom?

Any advice/recommendations are appreciated.

You may want to look at the panasonic ZR1, it does hd and is about 180 dollars, you get a 8x zoom.

The ZS1 is actually a pretty good camera. And had pretty good image quaility. But it will not be a great sporting event camera as point and shots have to much camera lag to capture that moment you want.

Interesting.. I'll give it a look. What's the main difference(s) between the ZR1 and ZS1?

If you really want to go deep discount, look at the Samsung SL720. Only 5X optical zoom but it has everything else and sell for around $120.00.

If you want the 12X optical zoom the ZS1 is the way to go at $180.00

I like the 12x zoom on the ZS1, but I would prefer having HD video. The ZR1 still has 8x zoom and HD video which seems pretty good, and is at my price point.

How does the SL720 compare to the TL320, besides the extra ~$50?

**Edit**

Looks like the ZS3 has gotten a lot of good reviews - I found it for around $220 with an 8gb SD card and some other extras.. wondering if this would be a good option as it has the HD video and 12x zoom. Thoughts on this model compared to the others discussed so far in this thread?

The ZS3 is a very good camera. It also has an LCD with 460K pixels, in contrast to the ZS1 which has 230K pixels. The HD video has the same features as the ZS7. It remains a very good camera at a very good price point.

The Samsung SL720 actually has HD video, it is physically smaller than then TL320. There are good number of very enthusiastic users of the SL720.

Is the Sony H55 any good compared to the ZS3? Found it for around the same price, and the "sweep panorama" seems interesting.

Samsung offers a lot of features at attractive prices but that's about it. To me, their products overall are bad both in terms of quality and reliability. Go to the Amazon outlet store and you'll find that most returned electronic products are Samsung. I'd stay away from it.

ZS3 is a great camera, and that is a very good price on it.
