those reviews are way blown out of proportion. My friend has had that camera for 2 months now, shooting allot of video clip. As long as you do not shoot at toward you will be fine like Mtclimber said. And you really do not want to shoot toward the sun either as you will have your subject in shadows.

Both the ZS3 and ZS5 are great point and shoots. But if you can get the ZS3 for 190, I would get that in a heartbeat. But if it is 240, I spend the extra 30 and get the ZS5. JMTC.

I guess what I really need to understand is the difference between AVCHD Lite format video and MPEG-4 video at 30fps which the ZS5 will shoot. What does that mean for me? How significant is the difference?

You really will not see any difference. 30fps is the standard for 720p

the AVCHD format is compression. it saves you space on your card and harddrive. its not a new format in the terms of resolution of fps.

So, if I have a high capacity memory card (and maybe a spare one) when I go to vacation etc, I shouldn't be bothered much the fact that ZS5 won't compress as well as a ZS3 would, and ZS5 would give me better features over ZS3 otherwise... Is that a correct statement?

The differences that I can see are:
ZS3=10.1 MP vs ZS5=12.1 MP
ZS3=3" LCD vs ZS5=2.7 LCD
They use different video compressing formats
ZS5 uses SDXC card whereas ZS3 cannot.

Is that all?

BTW, thank you Hards80 for that explanation. That helped a lot.

I could get ZS5 for $256.99 at Amazon with free shipping.
Hmm.... I am still undecided between ZS3 and ZS5.

Z3 is $273.95 + free s&H at Abe's of Maine or $298.48 + free s&H at Amazon

So Z5 is a little cheaper at the moment.
