Default camera for teen with some interest in photography

Hi,

I am shopping for a camera for my 16 yr old daughter. She likes to take both macro and landscape shots for exhibiting at 4H, and also wants her camera to be smallish and good for all those friend snaps that teens like. Her older sister has a fuji F30 that has served her well, but these are no longer available.

Any suggestions?

weigela-

Unfortunately there is no really comparable camera to the Fuji F-30 on the market today. The Panasonic ZR1 is a good option at around $200.00 but it has a weak built-in flash unit. It will do fine for natural light macro shots and outdoors, but it flash range (the distance from camera to subject, measured in feet.) is 10 feet or less.

mtclimber,

Thanks for the suggestion. I had been starting to read about the ZR1 in the meantime since my post. It sounds pretty good for our purposes. The issues with the flash probably wouldn't be a deal breaker. I may have missed this in my reading; how does it do with the macro shots? And how do you find the battery life?

I am also considering a fujifilm F31 for $310 that I found on ebay.

Thanks,
Weigela

weigela-

ZR1 macro shots are fine and batteries consumption is above average. $310 sound like a BIG price for an F31 to me!

The flash is good to about 8 feet on the zr1. But it is starting to get a bit harder to find.

Well, I decided to make a much lower offer(than the $310) on the F31 and see where that gets me.

Otherwise, I read some of the posts on the ZS7/ZS6 and I think that might offer my daughter small size, good quality on automatic plus the room to grow and start learning a bit more with the option of some manual controls.

thanks,
Weigela

ZS6/7 is a good option with growth and has very good image quality. It is a very good choice for a camera.
