When making a camera choice the largest criteria has to be image quality. That is where the Olympus Stylus 7000 does not do well. For about the same price you could get the Panasonic ZR1 with similar features and much better image quality.

In the video flare problem you discuss, the only time that occurs is when shooting directly into a powerful light source, be it the sun, a light bulb or whatever. So it is fairly easy to avoid. A dedicated camcorder will always take better video shot than a still camera that has a video feature.

I ended up buying the zs7 and I think I'm going to be happy with it.

It arrives in less than a week so hopefully it will all work out.
