Default HX5 and FZ35 inquiry

I'm interested in spending up to $350 on a new camera as my old one accidentally ended up in the washing machine!

I generally want to take pictures of city and nature landscapes and animals. But i also like to take HD video too!

The type of photos i want to take are those where one object or area is focused and the foreground/background is blurred.. kind of like this photo where the foreground is a bit blurred
http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/photos-a...03782_6152.jpg

Also I'd like to take shots where the camera removes a fence in the picture, like say a zoo shot where you can see the animal with out the cage around it. My friend with his Nikon D40 is able to take such shots where his camera removes the fence. Do either of those cameras have that ability?

If both cameras can do that, I think i'll prefer the HX5 due to its portability and higher res video, but i'm willing to settle for the FZ35 if its that much better (and perhaps resort to settling on the next gen Iphone 4th gen for casual snapshots seeing as how it'll get a major camera upgrade with led flash!)

Dave-

Yes, the Panasonic FZ-35 is a physically larger camera. It is not pocket sized, but it is very compact and weighs just 14 ounces. In comparing the Sony HX5 and the Panasonic FZ-35, I own both cameras, the image quality of the FZ 35 is really a lot better and the FZ-35 has more features.

However, camera size has to fit into your lifestyle, so you will have to make that decision. Both cameras are capable of doing a blurred foreground.

IQ of the FZ35 and HX5V are worlds apart as Sarah Joyce pointed out. However, you might be more prone to carry the HX5V due to its smaller size.

how do the video and audio recording modes on the two compare? It seems that the HX5V can shoot at 1080i and at 60fps, but I hear bad things about its microphone and audio output? how about the FZ35

I don't own the FZ35 so I can't really comment. However, the video is very good on the ZS7 and the audio is excellent (excellent for a P&S camera I mean). The HX5V audio is horrendous but the video is very good - a little better than the ZS7 video generally speaking but less capable with high motion (it blurs details).

Hi Dave-

As you have already read, the Panasonic FZ-35 is clearly a step up from the HX-5, the ZS-7, and the Canon SX-210. The FZ-35 has both better still image and video image quality with dual channel sound. And when you examine the price difference in these cameras, the FZ-35 is a real bargain.

Default I dont agree!

I own the FZ38 (FZ35) & the HX5V (got it a month ago) and I have done a range of comparatives (low light, flash, macro, scenery etc) and I must say that the HX5 is excellent i.t.o IQ, it matches the FZ35 (in 95% of the comparatives, I zoomed in to 100% cops and it impresses, when you get to 150% you can see a difference against the FZ35 but I think thats the megapixel deficite comming into play) The HX5 beats the FZ35 hands down in low light shots, the HD video mode is exceptional, much better than the FZ35, on my HD TV the FZ35 though excellent for 720p is a touch grainy at times whereas the HX5 has better detail and no 'graininess' I have had no issue with the sound but the placing of the left mike isa bit stupid I keep covering it with my finger when holding the camera. the feature set of the HX5 is very good, but you get a great set of features with the FZ35 too, and more control over your photos.

Default use this to compare

This link provides a useful comparative tool bewteen the HX5v and the FZ35 (and others), towards the bottom of the page, click the compare button at right, then select the camera from the drop down list and click add. Provides a useful way to compare the IQ results and other features. Pretty much coincides with what I mentioned in my initial mail, useful tool.

Jostian sounds great in theory, but several of us have already owned the HX5 and did the comparisions on our own...for instance I own the ZS7, FZ35, & S90. Either I had a faulty HX5 or I didn't know how to set it up properly, but I gave it a good shot at all the shots you listed and the ZS7 was better in all areas for me except lowlight and then the HX5 was only just marginally better in lowlight, but nothing to turn anybody's head...

Post your own comparision pictures with EXIF data for all to see...that would be most convincing...most people are leary of person's with only a few posts with those kinda claims...

You most likely have a faulty FZ35 if it is not outperforming the HX5....

The HX5 or the ZS7 will never match the capabilities of the FZ35...not in my hands anyway...
