koolpc-

No, 9,000 actuations is not low. Expecially if it was purchased new at the XSi introduction. The 6 month shop warranty should give some peace of mind.

I'm sorry. How do you know it only has 9,000 actuations?

Somebody quoted it to you. How did they know?

Generally, that's only information that a service technician can obtain.

This is beginning to sound like it was owned by a little old lady who only used it to take photos in church on Sundays.

I went to see it in my local camera shop.

While there, we also saw an Olympus E-510. Don't know much about Olympus.

If you buy a used camera and it goes bad, that's bad for you. If you help your brother-in-law buy a used camera and it goes bad, that's bad for your whole family. You can gamble with your own money; don't gamble with somebody else's, especially a family member's.

If he can afford a new dSLR, that's what he should buy. If he can't, he should buy a new P&S, not a used dSLR.
