Default FZ35 or ZS5 - a newbie cry for help

I currently have a TZ3 which I really love for its compact size and 10x zoom but want to move up to a camera with manual controls and better picture quality. I've never owned a DSLR and want to see what manual controls are like.

I realize the two I'm considering are different types of cameras but I really like the compact form factor of the ZS5 but would be willing to go with the FZ35 if it provided a step up in features and picture quality (the differences in zoom don't bother me). I'd use this camera for pretty much everything from candle light to full sun outside shots.

I'd like to move up to an entry level DSLR like the Pentax K-x with an 18-250 lens but I'd be looking at at least 2-3x the price which I cannot afford right now.

TIA for your comments.

JoeTX-

Welcome to the Forum. We're delighted that you dropped by.

There would be a lot of advantages to going with the Panasonic FZ-35 camera. It would give you manual controls, noticeably better image quality, an better built-in flash unit, and an EVF rather that just pointing a ZS5 because you really can't see the LCD screen in bright sunshine.

The FZ-35 is a very user friendly camera. We have a large group of FZ-35 users in our Panasonic P+S folder. There you will find lots of photo samples and practical photo tips.

Thank you Sarah. I had read MANY of your posts and was very happy to see your extremely quick reply. I was definitely leaning heavily towards the FZ35 but just wanted to be sure I wasn't passing up a chance at a compact zoom that would fit my needs since I had such a good experince with my TZ3.

I'll be buying my friend's 6 month old but like new FZ35 for $250 which seems like a very good deal.

Thanks again.

JoeTX-

As you know the history and the condition of your friend's FZ-35 camera, that sounds like a good deal. However, there is one "BUT" that should also be considered. If Panasonic adheres to their normal camera introduction schedule, Panasonic is going to announce a FZ-35 replacement in Fall 2010, to have the new camera ready for the Christmas market.

After doing a lot research and finally deciding on a camera your advice to hold off is tough to swallow but I'm in no hurry if something better is just a couple months away. I'll hold off and see what Panasonic comes out with, at least the new models will drive down the prices of the current ones. Thanks again.
