If you're used to SLR quality, then why not look at the Sony NEX-3 and the Olympus PENs. Not as small, but not that much more than a point and shoot that won't disappoint you at every snap of the shutter.

The Olympus is $468, and it's pretty small.

Thanks for everyone's suggestions. I just ordered the Canon SD-4000is in red. We'll see how it goes. It was a bit less expensive and a bit smaller than the S90 and had HD video.

At a music festival this weekend some asked me to take her picture and it turns out she had the G11 so we talked about cameras for a bit. That one was definitely much larger than I'd want but looked pretty nice.
