Default which lens to buy for 550d?

hi,
i have been using the 550d with the kit lens (18-55mm IS) for a month.now im feeling that i really really need a better reach lens.so now im set to buy a super telephoto lens.which lens should i prefer to buy?? i am considering canon 55-250mm IS.but i also have read about canon 70-300mm IS USM.which one is better?
i also need a better macro lens.i really dont know anything about good macro lenses.so please suggest me.my budget is 700$ for these two lenses(telephoto and macro).

The 70-300 USM is a much better lens. It is a sharper, faster to AF, and brighter at equivalent ranges. It does do macro at 1:4 like the 55-250

If you shoot outdoor action, the 70-300 USM is a much better tool for that.

The 60mm macro does true macro at 1:1. the 70-300mm USM is no where as good as a true macro for macro shooting. But if you add the canon macro extension tube. It gets really good macro results.

A good macro zoom lens is the tamron 70-300mm, but it is not a really good zoom lens. Very soft on the longer end. It does 1:2 macro.

It can't. Not even close...If you want good macro- you'll have to buy a macro lens separately. The 60mm seems like a good buy if the focal length suits you.

i can use the 60mm macro as a portrait lens too.its bright and focal length is very good for it.a second thought just crossed my mind.can i use 50mm usm f 1.4 as a macro lens?then i wont need a 50mm f1.8.

you can use the 50 1.4 for close up, but it will not do true macro, only at 1:3 macro. If macro is your thing, a true macro lens is the best option.

Macro lenses do make excellent portrait lenses.

get a kenko or canon extension tubes. They do a great job with the 70-300mm. You just need to remove it when you are done with your macro work.

thanks alot
i have few more questions,if u dont feel annoyed-
does this 25 mm extension tube works only with 70-300mm USM lens?
there was a package of 3 extension tubes(12mm,20mm and36mm) of the same brand.what about them?
finally how does the canon extension tube perform? i just found out two...12mm and 25mm
