Default Looking for a new camera

Hi,

Im looking for a camera to better fit my needs. I am an airbrush artist and most of my photos are taken of shiny tanks with no flash. My son is in drama and Id like to take photos of him on stage. Again, no flash.
Requirements:
Low light performance
Adjustments- Id like some manual functions.
I can spend around $500 maybe more.

Dont really want a full sized DSLR.

Im considering a Canon S90, Panasonic LX5, any of the micro 4/3s.

Dont know if I should wait for more of the fall models to be unvieled.

Any help would be appreciated and I am open to suggestions. I have a P&S Panny now that doesnt cut it right now.

Thanks in advance, Jim

Kes-

Welcome to the Forum. We're pleased that you dropped by.

Why not a Pentax Kx, which is a very small DSLR with great low light ability?

Welcome, Kes. I'll second Sarah's suggestion of a Pentax Kx, highly-rated and with what's considered the best sensor available now. Its DA18-55 kit lens is splendid for general photography. That kit often sells for just over US$500. For very dim light, a Fast Fifty can be added, new or used, such as a manual SMC-A 50/1.7 (still pretty cheap).

I can't speak of the other cameras because I'm not familiar with them. Good luck!

with the low light drama your son is in. You will need something that has some reach. The s90 and lx3 will not have the ability to reach out to the stage. Short zoom range.

With the m4/3, you can get good low light performance, and can have some reach if you add the panasonic 45-200mm lens, new it is about 290 dollars. With the M4/3, since low light is a concern. The best one on the market current is the epl-1. It will shoot well upto 2000iso.

Even with the long zoom, the epl-1 is still a very compact package. I shoot a canon T1i, a pentax k-x as well. And they do not pack down as well as the epl-1.

Also if you are not into photo editing that heavy. The olympus jpeg engine is the best on the market, photos out the camera is just great, better then any dslr out the camera. As dslr are set up to let the user edit more.

But you can edit just as much as a dslr especially if you shoot in RAW format vs jpeg if that is something you are into.

Here are some low light examples of the epl-1 next to my canon t1i in low light. The epl-1 is selling for about 520 dollars.
