Default Help me decide

Hi,

I want to change my FujiFilm finepix s2500hd.

Shortly, I'm not satisfied.

What i want is:

  • Super image quality
  • HD Video (if with stereo mic, it would be better)
  • Min 15x optical zoom (without motor noise while zooming)
  • Nice night and macro shots (the flu(sharped) background is really impressing me, i think it's about the lens or sensor
Please do not suggest me SLR, I don't want it.

Cameras I've been thinking about are:

Nikon's P100
Panasonic's FZ38 or FZ100
Canon SX1 IS or SX20 IS
FujiFilm HS10

I've read many reviews saying nikon p100 and panasonic fz100's image quality is bad.

If you can advise me any other camera in this range, I'll be happy.

Or at least try to drive me to a solution with your knowledge and experience.

Thanks

Welcome to the Forum. We're pleased that you dropped by.

Of the group you have listed, the Panasonic FZ-38 (FZ-35 if you are in the USA) is the best choice IMO. Because (1) The camera, at least here in the USA, is now at it's all time low price. (2) The Fx-38/35 is a very user friendly camera that provides excellent image quality, HD video, and 18X optical zoom. (3) We don't know for sure how the FZ-100 will shape up yet, and because it is selling at near its full retail price.

The Canon SX-1 and Fuji HS-10 are higher in price. The Nikon P-100 has not proven to be camera with excellent image quality. The SX-20 is due for imminent replacement, which will sell at it full list price. The SX-20 design is outdated.

mtclimber,

Well firstly thanks for your valuable comment.

The price of the camera is not the real problem, I just want to have the best one.

So I'm ready to pay whatever the price is.

I was impressed when I first read about panny's fz100 but the user comments disappointed me.

Nikon's P100 also has a lots of negative reviews over the internet.

Finally, what do you recommend me?

To wait untill Panny's Fz100 is fully tested or to wait canon's next slr-like or you advice me not to loose time and buy fz38?

Thanks

The Panasonic FZ-100 is something of a question mark. There are no professional reviews yet and user reports have been very mixed. In contrast, the FZ-35 is a well proven and user friendly design that that is capable of excellent image quality.

Personally, I would wait a bit and see what shakes out with the FZ-100. It looks to have potential, but right now is an unproven product.

mtclimber,

Currently I'm in Czech republic but I am from Macedonia.

I will return back to Macedonia on 6th of September.
Panasonic stuff comes so late in Macedonia but I think it's already in stock FZ100 here in Czech republic.

What I want to say, like you said I will wait for professional reviews of FZ-100 untill 3rd of September ( I hope some professional reviews will be done till that time).

If nothing happens I will go for FZ38.

And one more thing, what do you think about canon's next slr-like? Are there any rumours about it?

Really thanks for your ideas.

Canon has been very slow with super zoom replacement cameras. I would not expect to see anything at all before Photokino begins on 24 September.

Today I read that FZ100 has a new MOS sensor but the FZ40/45 has the CCD.

I think FZ35/38 had CCD as well.

So I think the new FZ40/45 might meet our expectations.

What do you think about this?

I would only be guessing if I said that the new FZ-40 would meet your expectations. I have seen no sample photos nor reviews from the new camera. It does have a CCD imager, I have read.

What we do know is that the FZ-38/35 is a very good camera and a safe bet.
