It seems to me that, since gorillas are very nearly black, and that the jungle doesn't provide great light at ground level, that something like a 70-200/2.8 might be a better choice. And if I could afford it, I'd bring along an f/2.0 prime just in case.

If I had to carry that much weight it would be the 100-400L IS USM no doubt...you can buy both the 100-400 and the 70-200 f/4L for less than the 70-200 f/2.8 II IS USM...no way I would trade those two for a 70-200 f/2.8L II IS USM unless I was shooting alot indoors such as sports, etc...

mountain gorilla's do let you get very close - they really are not bothered by humans - at least the ones that are used to humans coming on photo safari's

I'd operate on the premise that I don't have to outrun the gorilla; I only have to outrun the person between me and the gorilla.
