Default Should I Upgrade my Canon 10D?

I am a Intermediate photographer and travel at least twice a year in which I primarily use the camera for outdoor use.

I am going to Dubai and Africa in January and want to take a lot of photos and perhaps take advantage of the video use!

Personally I think in terms of megapixels having a 6.1 MP upgrading to an 18 MP is quite an upgrade!

Is there a need to upgrade? Thanks for the advice in advance!!!!

Things have progressed quite a bit since the 10D. However it was and still is a capable camera, is there anything you are unhappy with? from an image quality or feature standpoint. If you are still happy with the results another option is getting a dedicated camcorder for your video needs.

I guess I just want to stay up to date with the newest.. since having a 6 megapixel camera is almost comparable to the IPhone 4 scares me-

Maybe I should invest in some lenses-

well comparing the 6mp imager in your 10d to the iphone 4, thats like comparing the 6 cylinder in a BMW to a 6 cylinder hyundai.

investing in new lenses is always a good choice, as they make a big impact on your photography. what is your current lens selection?

i am not trying to talk you out of upgrading per se, as the new cameras are significantly better, just letting you know there are other options to increase your photography arsenal besides just a new body.

i'd recommend upgrading for the live view monitor, which can make framing more fun in certain circumstances, the faster shooting speeds, the much faster burst mode and the higher quality pics at much higher ISOs.

wish i knew more about lenses - when i had my canon, i had canons and sigmas only.

I would certainly consider some lens upgrades, however if you were to get a new body then you likely would get a good kit deal. If you are upgrading the body, these lenses would really hold it back apart from the Sigma. Changing to the new Canon 15-85 would give you a really good walk around system and mean you didn't need to carry the Sigma, unless you really like the fisheye look. Something else to consider would be the Sigma 17-70 (don't get the stabilised version) or the Tamron 17-50, again avoiding the stabilsed optoin. If there are other lengths you like to shoot then we can come up with other suggestions that will help your system out.

I will say that while I have 4 dSLRs with liveview I don't use it all that much for photography really apart from macro and obviously when I shoot video.

As Hards said, getting a dedicated video camera will be easier and yield better results unless you put some work in to get the best out of a dSLR with video.
