Leica never built (and/or sold) cameras for the masses. They've always had a very selective (and wealthy) crowed (with some exceptions, of course), which can afford spending $2000+ on a P&S delux.

We are all assuming that the X100 is capable of producing the best IQ that there is. So, at this point, the desire to having one is purely based on looks, features and functionality. However, if the camera fails to perform, all bets are off.

that is certainly true, it better live up to its promises for a 1000$ pricetag on a fix lens camera.

35 is already a tiny bit wide for me, but with 12Mp there is room to crop down to 50mm equivalent and still have 8Mp or so. But there must be a reasonable chance of Fuji making a wide version at some point too.

You know the Fuji GF670 MF Folder? aka Bessa III. Fixed 80mm lens ~40mm equivalent. $3,000 list price. Selling as fast as they can make them? Well Fuji have announded a version with a 55mm lens. ~23mm equivalent.

But a comment on how much people are willing to pay just for a 35mm lens!

Fuji X100 - $1,000.
Canon 35mm f1.4 L - $1,350.
Zeiss 35mm f2 EF mount - $1,000.
Zeiss 35mm f1.4 EF mount - $1,800
Leica 35mm f2.5 M - $1,700
Leica 35mm f2.0 M - $3,000
Leica 35mm f1.4 M - $5,000

Leica sell more than half of all their cameras and lenses in Japan and Korea.

Buying a lens is a total different type of investment. Lenses will last a lifetime (if well taken care of). A great lens can be used on multiple cameras, year after year while a camera will eventually become outdated (it may also last a lifetime but stored inside a camera bag). If the X100 offered interchangeable lenses, it would be a different story.
