Default Canon XS or X1I

I am interested in the 2 above models -- any advice? I am a beginner SLR user. I was told by the salesperson I spoke with that neither of these models allows you to use the Live View screen while in auto mode. Apparently Live View only works when in manual mode. True?

If LiveView is a priority, the a Sony DSLR would be a much better choice, as they have a much better LiveView implementation. On a Sony, ye, you can shoot automatic in the LiveView mode without a problem.
