Actually the closet you can reach with a megazoom is the canon sx30 with 840mm of reach and it shoot at 1600iso. But like the HS10, it will not be great past 800iso as the 1/1.23 sensors really do not perform well in low light. Which was on of the OP's requirements. Especially if you start to zoom out and the lens starts to stop down.

Which pentax would it b? The K-x or the K-r ? Rather inclined towards the K-r, but am hesitant since v new and no hands on reviews yet. Should I wait? What abt Nikon 3100?
Going back to the prosumer level do u think Nikon P7000 should "overall/generally" outperform the Canons ?

The k-r is brand new, and it looks to b a winner. If you are willing to spend the extra the k-r is worth it. But if you are looking to save, the k-x is the best value out there.

The d3100 is nice, but nikon kits are a bit short. Only 200mm, so it will go way over your budget with a 700 camera with the kit lens and a good 70-300 will be around 500 dollars.

The k-x 2 kit lens with the 18-55 and 55-300 is about 750 dollars, and the k-r will the same kit lens will still be under 1000 dollar I suspect.

I have a FZ35 and started with a Casio superslim way back when D cameras were just starting to come in vogue followed by an Olympus 4mp and a Pentax 7mp. Then with facebook etc this hobby rekindled and after alot of pondering got the FZ35.Although have read alot of gd abt it, I am nt that impressed with it(prob nt getting the settings right, although have gone through Sarahs guide).I just had a baby Boy and babies r never still which results in blurry images(without flash),the colors indoors r also a little off, which then forced me to think of improving on my choice.
Secondly, one of my favorite hobbies is hunting boars often done here at night with spotlights therefore the requirement for highspeed >3 fps and xcellent low light performance.

You will want a dslr, for the low light abilities, the pentax shoots well at 3200 as well as the canon T1i. Which is another good option for you. And the 55-250 is a decent lens, not as long reaching as the pentax kit, 400mm of reach vs 450mm or reach. And if you are not shooting birds in flight, it should AF fast enough also.

But do u think that PENTAX K-r would b better than the t2/t1i's, Nikon D3100/5000 olympus e620 generally and Nikon P7000 than the Canon's at the prosumer level?

The k-r looks very impressive. I know the K-x and The T1i are very close in performance. Image quality wise they are all very good. But to get a package with the nikon or canon that will give you the reach of the pentax k-r or k-x you will have to spend a bit more then 1000 dollars. The pentax is a better low light camera then the olympus e620, but it will have have the reach of the olympus for the same price.

It really comes down to what you need. So if low light is the most important, then the canon, pentax, nikon or sony is a good choice. But if reach is most important the e620 is the better bet. If price is a important factor the k-x and k-r is a good choice along with the olympus. Lens option, the the canon hands down. AF the canon lead in this segment of the dslr market.

Indoors kids without flash? S95 or LX5.

Boar hunting at night? Blimey! Maybe a Nikon D3 or Canon 1-series DSLR. Hard to think of a more challenging scenario.

actually boar hunting at night is not that difficult a scenario. Anyways till now at the prosumer level is the Nikon P7000 top of the list or lx5 or g12/11 or s95 better?
At the DSLR level Pentax tops with canon 2nd and nikon 3100/5000 3rd?

You will get more all round use at a good price from the Pentax Kx.
