Default Compact digital with best zoom

My 84 yo Mum has been using a Pentaz SLR for bird photography for 30+ years and now that she is less stable on her feet, finds the SLR with big lenses cumbersome.
Rather than have her give up photography, I would be very grateful if the Forum could advise on a compact digital with great zoom, no video, no price limit and good image quality that she could carry around in her bum bag (fanny bag for the USA members).
Cheers everyone. Lyn

Take a look at something like the canon sx30is 35x zoom giving a range of 24-840mm currently the longest range megazoom on the market, then there panasonic fz40 24x zoom, They are pretty compact cameras, and will fit in a fanny pack.

For birds, I think the canon sx30 would actually be the better option. That 840mm of reach just makes everything easier to get close to the smaller ones.

SX30 seems ideal to me.
