Video performance; HD, at least 720p with stereo microphone.
The Nikon D3100 and Pentax K-x have a built in mono only mic, with no provisions to use an external microphone.

The 550D meets your requirements the best, as you can put a external stereo mic.

Canon's SX30 IS or Panasonic's FZ40 or FZ100 are not even comparable with these SLR cameras according to my requirements?

none of the megazooms perform well pass 800iso. That is their top end. The DSLR are way better low light cameras.

Hi there, I hope your son is doing fine.I too am faced with a similar dillema.Prosumer or dslr? I have a fz35 and want to improve on it. I would suggest that one should wait a bit for the Pentax k-r and the Nikon D3100 to b thoroghly reviewed which should not b long and then take a decision.

if money is no option and you want the very best combination of video and still images. you could not go wrong with the Canon 550D.

as Jim mentioned, neither the nikon 3100 or the Pentax KX have stereo mics, the new Pentax that Fayyaz mentioned does not have a stereo mic either.

So that leaves you with the Canon 550D as the one that best meets your needs. Its a great cam, enjoy.
