Thanks for all the suggestions everyone - I think it probably is best to go with the Canon kit to start until I get the feel for what I need and then spend the money on a better quality lens. I'll keep lingering on the forums to see what information I can gather, but it has been a great resource. I can't wait to make the purchase and start shooting!

T2i camera 18-55 & 55-250 kit - $900 (if BB takes my coupon)
2 x Extra Batteries - eBay - $15
2 x 16GB Class 10 SD cards - eBay - $70
Cleaning Kit - ~$6
Case - ~$50?
Tripod - ~$30?
Maybe I could even squeak in a Speedlite 430EX II flash...

skip the 30 dollar tripods, they are cheap and not stable. A gust of wind can knock it over.

Agreed on the tripod. You can probably hand-hold steadier than a $30 tripod.

Make sure you buy reputable brand batteries and SD cards. Just 'cos it has xxx ma on the side or Class 10 doesn't make it true. It IS possible to get very good deals on that sort of thing on eBay, it's also possible to get horribly ripped off.

Where can I find a suitable tripod (small enough to travel with)?

The SD cards are Transcend. I have a 2GB for my P&S and it's fine, granted it is not a class 10. I even did some web searching regarding their class 10 and they were getting high grades.

If you are looking for a small travel size tripod, look at the cullmann nanomax. They run about 50 dollars, made well and small.

PS if you need a flash and looking for something the is more affordable look at the nissin di622 and for just slightly less the the canon the metz 48 is another option.

Ebay is a bad place for memory cards, allot of fakes and hacked cards out there.

As others have stated, don't buy SD cards off Ebay, Newegg.com had transcend 16gb(10) for about $31 each free shipping. Also get Canon batteries, I would not want to put clone batteries into my camera that I just spent $800 plus on, and have them leak,,thats just me...

I have clone batteries form ebay, they work just fine. And work as well as the OAM ones.
