D3100 is currently at $629 at Adorama.com but that only includes kit lens.
And if you add the printer for $465, there is a $450 rebate as well.

It is not worth getting a printer, printing at home is way more expensive then going to a walmart or target.

That's true but the plan is to sell the printer for half price.
I've seen this printer going for over $200 easily.
That will help bring the final cost down.

That is a good idea, if it pans out and putting the money form the fz toward the system. You will really be able to drive the price down.

I personally do not trust mail in rebates one bit. If it was an instant rebate, then that is different. But my boyfriend has been waiting over a year for his rebate from his video card upgrade and I have many others like that.

Anyways I was really not interested in video. Just fast shutter speeds and good image quality.

Instant rebates are much better, I waited 6 month for the last mail in rebate.

The nikon is a nice system. It should cover you needs with the kit lens, 70-300, and the 35 1.8. That is a pretty solid kit. You have long range shoot, wide angle and low light covered.

Oh yeah, if you are into macro there is a very low cost solution if you are interested since you are getting the long zoom.

Ok FZ35 is gone, now I have to start looking seriously at dslrs.

I did find a decent deal on a used but pristine condition D-90 for $650 or D-90 with the 18-200mm nikon lens for $1100.

I obviously want the 35mm f1.8 prime, but I am curious which of the lens are better 18-200 nikon or 70-300mm nikon?

And would a used D90 be better than a D3100?

70-300 is the better lens hands down.

I would go with the d90, you can get the AF 50 1.8 for 100 dollars also if you need more reach.
