Default Camera for beginner under $250

I looking to upgrade from my current digital camera which is a Canon Powershot SD1100IS. I'm definitely a beginner in regards to photography so I'm probably not taking full advantage of my current camera, but am looking for something with better picture quality and more versatility. I was looking at cameras classified as "Ultra or Super Zoom" and the main purpose of this camera will be taking pictures of our son, his milestones, our family, and vacations/trips. I'd like to keep this camera under $250 as we continue to learn the in's and outs of digital camera options/features and to be better photographers. I have been looking at the Nikon Coolpix L110, and Fujifilm FinePix S1800, but am open to suggestions.

Thanks in advance!

go with the fuji over the nikon, nikon do not make as good point and shoot. Unlike their dslrs which are excellent

Actually the Fuji S-1800 has received uniformly bad reviews from users and professional reviews. I would look at the Canon SX-130.

Are there any other cameras in the price range I should consider over the Fuji?

Sorry, I guess I didn't refresh the page before I made my last post. I'll check out the SX-130.

Default Hi JD78 and mtclimber

Hi JD78,

I am in the same boat as you. Did you decide upon something? If yes, which one and what were the reasons. It would help me decide for myself. Thanks!!

mtclimber:

I am looking at 3 models... Sony DSC H55, Canon SX130 IS, and Nikon L110.

Actually I wanted a camera with good zoom but qulality and clarity of photographs remains the most important factor.

I know that Sony H55 offer only 10X zoom while Canon SX130 IS offers 12X and Nikon L110 does 15 X

But I have no idea about the picture quality of these models...

From some other sources, I get a feeling that Nikon doesn't offer as good a picture quality (except in DSLR)...

but which one of the Sony H55 and Canon SX130 would you rate high on picture quality... please guide me... I have to decide by today itself...

Other experts are also welcome to share their experiences...

thanks all!!

A friend of mine was in the exact same boat as you guys. He ended up getting the Panasonic ZS7. Amazon's price on that is around $235 to $255..depends of which week you check. The Panny ZS7 has really great reviews from user and professional sites. Don't have one myself, but my friend really like it.
