Default Lumix LX5, FZ40/100 or Canon SX30 for Auto mode?

Hi everyone,

I'm planning to get a camera but am totally new to the advanced cameras world. So the camera I am looking for will primarily be used in fully Auto mode plus it will be used by the whole family.

My heart is set on a Panasonic LX5 (I could potentially learn to use it manually) but I was thinking how would it perform as a P&S in fully auto mode? I am looking for a slightly upmarket camera.

Would I be better off with a FZ40 or Canon SX30 (in terms of image quality) and get similar results in Auto mode?

Thanks.

P.S. Its for all sorts of lighting (outdoor, indoor, low light)

The LX5 will most likely give you the best results (I don't own one and have never used one)...but it does require in camera adjustments for the best photos from what I have read....

The other cameras are just OK in Auto Mode...but not for indoor or low light...I would get the Canon S95 as it's Auto Mode seems to do well for my wife and it will do much better indoors/low light...it also has some very good "fun" modes like Color Accent and Vivid, Color Swap, etc...
Color Accent (I used Orange, but you can pick the color to accent or highlight)

Indoor it's great with adjustable flash output:

Outdoor it's also very good but the Zoom is limited to 105mm:

And a few more examples of the S95 capabilities:

Xcellent Camera the S95,prob the best in it's class. But if U want a bit longer zoom(7x) in a highend/prosumer level P&S do look up Nikon P7000 as well.
