s95 is more pocketable, lx5 has a few more features and controls.

Image quality on both is the same: excellent!

Maybe a little oversimplified but I agree completely and the details are available in the comparative reviews.

They dpreview did a head to head compo. It was a dead heat, no winner.

So is you want to be able add a hotshoe flash, or want more features, go with the panny.
If you want the most compact, go with the canon.

LX5 probably has the advantage with video, since it has optical zoom and autofocus during video. That alone will be worth the extra $100 to some. S95 is quite fun though with its special effects features, as an owner I don't mind its short-comings in video. I haven't put it thru its full paces, but it does well enough. Both are really only for casual video anyway.

I myself have bought the LX5 just a couple of days back and couldn't be more happier. There are some clear benefits of the LX5 such as fast F2.0 lens, better wide angle (24mm), better video (optical zoom and continuous auto-focus), hotshoe support. There are more things but this is what's coming from the top of my head.

However, It's been said that the S95 produces better JPEGs straight out of camera and people have criticized the color reproduction of the LX5. To my eyes this wasn't really the case and as said above, the image quality of both cameras is simply great.

Both cams have a 2.0 lens but the LX5 remains brighter throughout the focal range. Otherwise, everything you said is correct and I agree 100%. The difference in JPEGs is pretty minor imho. As for the color reproduction, I do think Canon is more pleasing to the eye as Panasonic bumps their greens up too high for my taste. This is much less of a concern w/ RAW file though apparently.
