Default Canon S95 v. G12

Hi,

My husband is starting to get into photography. I've used a compact point and shoot for years and now since my husband wants to start taking photography classes I figured we could splurge this holiday and get him a more substantial camera. Something that has more features but not too intimidating. I was looking at the S95 or the G12...which would you recommend. We've looked at both cameras, he likes the feel of the G12, I like the compactness of the S95. In terms of a camera that he can learn and grow with, which is best?

Thanks for any advice!

My vote goes to G12, which gives you more nice grip,
and also having more controls for manual shooting. G12 FTW.

The G12 would be my recommendation as well. It can also take an external flash which the S95 cannont. The S95 however is very compact and slim compared to the G12. I own a S90 (previous generation to the S95) and I use it as a handy carry along to a regular DSLR.

Isn't the G12 like $500? You can get a DSLR for that kind of coin. Now there would be some learning and growing! Just sayin.

I own an S95 but if size wasn't an issue I would go for the G12.

I agree...check out a DSLR, first before you buy a G12.

I have to disagree. While the G12 is expensive, there's going to be quite a difference in portability between that and a DLSR for the equivalent reach. Also, going from a P&S straight to a DLSR is a huge jump. There's a reason why they call bridge cameras, bridge cameras.

Of course you could look at the Panasonic LX5 instead which can be had for $100 less than a G12 right now.

LX5 is at same grade with S95, G12. Very high IQ, Compact camera.
It has cheap price, and little more compact than G12. But having almost equal grip and ergonomics.

Go to local camera store and get hands-on with both of them. I highly recommend LX5.
and What matters: Does he really need super-compactness with S95?

I had a G10 for a year or so. While it was a great camera, it was bulkier than I wanted...I could carry my small dslr almost as easily. I replaced it with the S90. The S95 offers all the manual control, minus some bells and whistles and durability with the same sensor you'd get in the G12. I know the argument that the g12 has a hotshoe is mentioned often, but really a flash balances very poorly on the G12 and increases the bulk considerably. You can't go wrong with either...you just have to decide what is more important..size or extra control and durability.
