Default Canon G12 or SD4500? or the S95?

My dad got his camera stolen on a recent trip and wants to replace it. He had the G9 and was happy with the photos he got. I have an SD800 myself, and am happy with that as well for my P&S on the go photos. He still wants something small to keep in his pocket.

We have read the reviews but we're still wondering which would be a better choice for picture quality, low light, and possible videos (he has never done video but is now interested).

I just read a few threads and reviews on the S95, so I'll add that to the list.

Which would be your choice? thank you!

Maybe I should give more info. He does a lot of traveling and although he sometimes needs zoom, he is mostly taking landscape shots, people and village photos, etc. He often needs low light for indoors since they usually don't allow flash. He would like a good quality picture that he can view on his laptop, TV and make some prints (nothing larger than 8x10).

I don't think the G12 is good for a pocket camera, it's a on the large size for some pockets. But IQ is great.

Don't know about the SD4500.

The S95 is very good for a true pocket camera. I've been using a S90 all week and it's very impressive for a pocket camera. 8X10 prints? Although it handles noise very good, anything ISO 800 and above is asking quite a lot for a pocket camera. But low ISO for daytime shots are no problem at 8X10.

Well a G12 won't fit in his pocket but otherwise would be my 1st choice. The S95, which I own, is a great pocket cam and does very well in low light. The SD4500 is definitely not suited for low light at all. The SD4000 would be a better 3rd option, but it's still inferior to the S95.

That's not good to hear. I thought it read that it was good for low light.

We went shopping yesterday with my dad (who is very active in his 70's, but doesn't use many of the manual settings) fell for the SD4500. He bought it and is trying it out today, after charging. We can return it if it doesn't work out, so he's giving it a try.

I had not seen the size of the G12 until then, and I think it was larger than his G9, and he did complain that did not fit well in his shirt pocket. Now he can put his camera in his pants pocket if needed.

I'll let you know how he likes it. Thank you all for your info.

The S95 is perfect for your Dad...f/2.0 on the wide end...the G12 is f/2.8 and won't be as good as the S95 on the wide end...the S95 has some great fun features that take good photos...vivid mode...color accent...
