The Sony HX1 is a very good camera, but somewhat dated. It does do HD video. I have a good deal of camera experience and it took me about a week to really get into the HX1 and to achieve very good results.

Here is a photo sample from the HX1 taken from a distance of 20 feet. I use the built-in flash to add a bit of flash fill-in.

i'll take a look at the photo when I get home I can't see these at work!

what is dated about it? Would you suggest something else in its place?

I don't even know if she would care if it has HD video I just thought that would be a neat feature! haha
Do dslr's take better quality pictures in the same price range?

actually am really considering the panasonic fz35 but found out about the fz40... should I spend the extra 50 for it is it worth it? I found some shot comparisons and I think I do like the fz40 pictures more

The Canon SX-130 is a very good camera with 12X optical zoom (28mm to 336mm). Amazon has it at $154.95. If you want more zoom the FZ-35 is $255.95.
