Default First DSLR,Need Help on decision

Hello Everybody,

I plan to buy my first DSLR camera this week. I am new to DSLR cameras and need your opinion and recommendations. My main use will be photographing models and regular use.I dont care about video,I have a Canon HF S100 camcorder for video use.

I want to stay under $600.

I have been reading reviews and researching 3 main cameras.
1.Canon T1i
2.Nikon d5000
3.Pentax K-x

Right now,I am really leaning towards a refurbished Canon T1i with 18 EF-S 18-55mm IS for $499.

I want to know what you guys think and is there a better deal.

Thanks in advance,
Damien

I have eliminated the nikon d5000.

So it is just between the canon t1i and pentax k-x. I am wondering how dealing with batteries in the penatx is.

It might be a deal breaker.

Are there any refurbished pentax k-x under $500?

no problems with AA rechargeable if you use sanyo eneloop batteries. They will give you 700 photos without a problem on a charge.

I shoot a T1i and a K-x. If you shoot more action, go with the T1i, it is a better AF system. If you shoot in low light, and use the higher iso. The K-x is a bit cleaner. Canon does give you more lens options. Both camera are great for general photography.

Thanks shoturtle.I really appreciate it.

It will just be for general photography.

I still see most pentax k-x with the 18-55mm lens at $600 and up.I want to stay as close as I can to $500 and that is why am I considering the refurbished Canon T1i with the 18-55mm lens for $499.

Which would you guys get if you were on a budget?

Is the pentax worth the extra $100 or so.

Thanks

get the refreb t1i, as long as it is a canon factory refreb. Adorama.com be the best to get a canon factory referb as they give you a 1 year warranty. That match what a new one gets. And it is from canon. The t1i will give you the better AF system. And larger lens selection. Also it fits into your target budget better.

Thanks again,
I am leaning towards the Pentax k-x now. I found a new pentax k-x with the 18-55mm lens and a 50-200mm lens for $540.

I am not familiar with lenses but it sounds like a good deal.

It seems that nobody beats canon refurbished prices. They only offer a 90 day warranty tho. I bought my canon HF S100 camcorder refurbished from canon shop website and it was only $474 instead of $650+ everywhere else, and it seemed brand new. Not a scratch, finger print or nothing. The service reps said that most of the refurbished items are overstock that is sent back to them from stores.

Damien, can I ask why you eliminated the Nikon?? I am in a similar position to you, with views of buying my first dSLR, and I'm looking at the Nikon D3100, Canon EOS 1000D (i think that is also known as the rebel XS) and the Canon EOS 500D (T1i).

Thanks,
Chris

The 50-200mm is not that good of a lens, the 55-300mm is a much better lens.
