Default First DSLR, need advice!

Hi,

I am looking at getting my first DSLR. I want a decent camera without a ton of money to spend. I was looking at the Canon Rebel XSI vs the Nikon D3100. Are they both great cameras? I know the Nikon is for videos... Not sure if I would end up using that feature or not.

But, I found a guy on craigslist who is willing to sell me his Canon XSI for $350 which includes everything and in mint condition. He said this is a good deal. He is upgrading to a dif camera. Is this a great deal? Should I buy this from him for this price? Let me know!
Thanks!

Adorama has a refurbished Canon XSi with the 18-55 stabilized kit lens with a one year warranty for $480. That's a good deal. $350 for a used XSi from someone who may have used the heck out of it and is sellign it without a warranty, is not a good deal.

What do you want to shoot?

I want to shoot everything from family shots, to simple shots outside. Nothing crazy. Beginning really. I feel this guy is a legit guy that took GREAT care of his camera. Mint condition. $350 for camera, lense, has receipt. Purchased 2 years ago. Ebay auctions are going much more. Not good deal? Please other people give advice also! I need more opinions!

bamayer-

The Canon XSi is a very good camera, though somewhat ISO limited. Have you actually meet with this seller? Have you seen and handled the particular camera he is selling? What looks good in an advertisement, should be checked out. You should also find out he purchased the camera from originally.

Cameras are very expensive indeed to repair. Like TCav mentioned I tend to stay away from used equipment that cannot be verified. The Adorama deal is more realistic, and if I remember correctly, Adorama also offers a 1 year guarantee as well.

Adorama's deal includes a warranty, not a guarantee. The difference is that, with a warranty, if something goes wrong, they'll fix or replace it; with a guarantee, they just give you your money back. Getting your money back doesn't help with all the lenses and accessories you may have gotten for the camera that you don't have any more.
