Default Advice on camera that will focus on my son

My son is adopted from Ethiopia. I have a Canon T1i, but am looking for a small point and shoot to keep in my purse. I purchased the Sony H20 previously and sent it back because I didn't like the flash that pops up on it. Today I got the Nikon S6000. I took six pictures of my son and none of the pictures were in focus. It was 10:00 in the morning, in my living room that has a full glass storm door and a large picture window. I also had a few lamps on. The camera could not focus on his dark skin. So, that one is going back to Amazon. Any recommendations on a camera that has some type of light that comes on similar to what my DSLR does that helps focus prior to the picture actually being taken or just one that in general has better focusing power?

Panasonic LX5 or Canon S95 ... 3rd place choice would be the Samsung EX1/TL500
