Default Canon Rebel Xsi focus and sharpness problem

Just registered for this sight and am very impressed with the knowledge many of the members possess.
My sons bought me a Canon Rebel XSI about two years ago. They bought it as a package deal and it came with a Canon EF 50mm 1.8, a Sigma 28-70mm 2.8-4 zoom and a Sigma 70-300 4-5.6 zoom.
I have never really been satisfied with the sharpness of the shots I have been taking. The best quality shots are coming from the 50mm but I expected that. It doesn't seem to matter what mode I am shooting in. I seldom shoot in full auto.
I have a fair bit of experience with SLR photography and took thousands of photos before the digital age came into being. The problems I am having are not those of a novice.
My son is more knowledgeable of DSLR photography and suspects it may be the camera body.
I certainly am not looking to winning photo contests but would like to have better quality shots.
Any advise for me. Thanks in advance.

Can you post some examples of the kinds of photos you've not been happy with?
  • The lens is the thing.
  • 'Full Frame' is the new 'Medium Format'.
