Default Camera for close up Photography

Hello all

I need to photograph a coin collection and I need some advice. I'm pretty much a newbie when it comes to this stuff so bear with me. I've got an old reliable Nikon Coolpix 950 but no accessories. I've done this in the past but it is very aggravating to set up as I try to use the Macro Mode but the camera is far too close to get the appropriate lighting.

So I can do a couple of things:

1) Get a 100mm lens such as the AF-S VR Micro-Nikkor. This is pretty expensive. Also, I'm not sure if it connects up with the Coolpix 950. I'd assume so but I don't want to spend that much on the lens if it doesn't work with this older camera.

2) OR...should I spent my money on a newer Nikon camera? Maybe I can get more bang for the buck this way. If so, any suggestions?

Thanks for any help you can give.

G'day Jom

Nice set of Qs mate ...

With such an old camera, I would not be spending much on accessories
Your cheapest option would be to chase up a Close-up Lens, either +3 or +4 Dioptre - costing you about $25-$40 for the diameter you need

Using a +3 gives a lens-to-subject distance of 13inches, and a +4 has a 10inch distance
This gives you plenty of space for lighting etc

The lens you mention appears to be for a DSLR. I seriously doubt it will fit on your Coolpix 950. I would seriously consider upgrading camera as you are working against yourself.
