The FZ is not a sports camera. The shutter lag, will cause issues. And the AF speed if fast for a pns, but still not fast for a dslr.

I have used a Pentax K-x and the FZ28 (which has a slightly longer shutter lag) for baseball, soccer, and football. Although the FZ28 didn't have the longer, sustained burst mode of the DSLR, it did ok - 3 or 4 shots in a second folllowed by a pause.
It depends what Archie is taking pictures of from what distance and in what lighting. The FZ35 could be ok for what he needs and can afford.

The FZ100 is no DSLR, but 5 shots per second w/ continuous AF is plenty fast for any casual shooter. The write speed - even with RAW files - is instantaneous also. There are certainly quibbles with the FZ100 but speed definitely isn't one of them. It's easily the fastest P&S/bridge I've ever used.

I know it is not a dslr, just saying it does not compare when putting it up against a dslr in AF speed. It might shoot a quick burst, but the AF will not track effectively for action shooting.

No one was disagreeing but not sure you realize how fast the FZ100 is compared to most P&S/bridge cams, both in AF and overall performance. Just some random comparisons ...

Panasonic FZ100 Shutter Lag, Full Autofocus: 0.336 - 0.288 sec
Nikon D90: 0.208 sec
Canon Rebel T2i 550D: 0.252 sec

try it at ai servo or continues focus. The FZ does not operated like a dslr in those modes
