Default Starter dSLR

I am looking for a starter dSLR. Currently, I am considering the Nikon d3100, but I am completely open to suggestions.

I take pictures at the beach of my dog, the surf, and the birds. I take tons of macro flower pictures. I would use this for beach shots, action shots, flower shots, and the odd vacation photo when I take trips.

I have no real need of video as I have a Kodak handheld that takes 1080p for me already, so that isn't a consideration for me.

Would the 3100 be my best option?

You should add Pentax K-x or K-r and Canon 500d or 550d in your consideration list. I own a K-x and am loving it. All these cameras are very good entry-level DSLRs.

One thing you should note about the d3100 is it doesn't have AF motor built into body, so lenses without the focus motor won't AF on the Nikon.

I mentioned the Kx to a friend of mine, as that was on my list, but he said to be careful that Pentax lenses tended to be pricier than Nikon's. Do you find that to be true?

Well, I for one disagree with your friend. No offense intended. Yes, there are few lens choices with a Pentax DSLR when compared to Nikon and Canon. However, I am very pleased with my Pentax Kx with the Pentax 18-55mm and Pentax 55-300mm lenses.

If you are looking to keep the camera price down, while still having a really great lens, and wonderful image quality, a good used Sony R1 can still be had for around $300.

I also just got a pentax k-x, and I really like it. Has some cool digital filters in it, so you can do some interesting things to your photos. I've found it to be quite easy to use and I've been very happy with the image quality. Don't know much about the other cameras you're looking at, but I thought I'd give you my opinion about the k-x.

Good to know about the AF, I think I would want that.

I looked online for the 550d, is that the Rebel T2i?

How does the Kx do on batteries?

Another question, do they all come with 1080p? I don't need it and don't want to be paying for it if I don't have to. Thanks.

gekko-
No, the Pentax Kx does not come with 1080p. I use Sanyo Eneloop batteries in my Kx and enjoy very good battery life.

I haven't needed to replace the batteries that came with my kx yet, but I've only had it a short time. I do plan to use rechargables, once this first batch of batteries dies.
