Default Best Point and Shoot?

In your opinion, what's the best Point and Shoot camera out there with at least 5X optical zoom, and preferably no more than $300? The Nikon Coolpix 8100? Canon SD 4500?

I realize I should have been more specific. It's hard to say which is the best-depends on what you're looking for.
Do I want the best image quality? The camera with the best movie ability? The camera that has the best build quality? The camera with the most features? The camera with the most zoom?

I'd say the best image quality and zoom.

Without a single doubt-

The Canon A3000 is the best and most cost effective camera available to most users.

But it only has 4X optical zoom. I have 3X now and want a lot more than that.

The Samsung WB2000 and the Panasonic Lumix DMCZ57 are some of the highest rated on Amazon.

Sue-

That being the case. How about the Kodak C-190 with 5X optical zoom.

ZS7 gets a nod from me in the super zoom category.

* Scratch my 2nd recommendation as I just saw your price limit
