Default Recommendation for Compact Zoom Camera

Hello guys,

I need some help to get some recommendations and suggestions for cameras since my old one is down..

Ideally, I hope it has the following properties...

1) Compact!
2) at least 15x optical zoom with decent image stabilizer?
3) at least 720p hd video recording
4) quiet zoom when video recording

Budget of say about $600+/-?

Or if there's any camera beyond my budget but really worth it, do point it out as well (:

Initially, I was aiming to try and probably get Olympus' new SZ-30MR, but after verification with their staff, it wouldn't arrive at my country anytime soon yet... and I happen to need a new camera for my trip soon next 2 weeks :\ So I hope there could be some recommendations!

Thanks in advance!

FZ35 or FZ40. If you want more of the focus on video than stills, then check out the FZ100. There are models that have manual zoom, which is quiet, but I don't know how still you can really hold the cam while twisting ...

I just found your question today. Have you bought one yet? I'm in the same situation as you, though since I don't need one until June, I can wait and see how the SZ-30MR rates at the review sites- I really like the multi-recording idea.

I have compiled a list of compacts for myself- many have a limited zoom (the higher IQ S95 and XZ-1 for example). However there is one model from Canon that appears to get good reviews for IQ and build and has a 28-336mm zoom (F2-4.9) and 720p video with IS - the model SX130IS- AND (I think a nice bonus) it uses 2AA batteries!

btw, I looked at Pan FZ100 reviews since I found it had ext mic option- I've only seen bad reviews of IQ so I'm not considering it anymore.

The Panasonic FZ40 gets my vote to meet your needs.
