Default First DSLR

I am looking to upgrade my olympus stylus to a DSLR. I have been very frusterated with the battery constantly dying, fuzzy pictures and horrible pictures in low light or at night.

I am looking to get a DSLR but need a little advice.

I will use it mainly for family functions including group photos, events with games, horseback riding, hiking with the dogs. I use the timer mode often and it would need to be compatible with a remote timer.

I do not care about video capabilities.

I am very frusterated with how generic and cheap my photos look from my olympus. I guess I'm ready to move up to the SLR world.

Thanks in advance!!

How much is your budget.

Most dslr will shoot what you liked. But events with game, does that mean sports. Or just fair and school outing kinda things? Horseback riding outdoors or inside?
Super Frequent Flyer, no joke. Ex Patriot and loving it.
Canon Eos 60D, T1i/500D, Eos1, Eos 630, Olympus EPL-1, and a part time Pentax K-X shooter.
