Default Best family camera - video and still photos?

My family is currently contemplating buying a new camera. Currently we have a Canon ZR600 (battery doesn't hold a charge) camcorder, and a Canon SD750 (which we are happy with). We like the idea of having a compact camera (can carry it with us easily to capture unexpected happenings) that can both take video and stills, and are currently leaning towards the Sony Cyber-shot HX9V. The camera will mainly be used for taking pictures of the kids and video (softball/baseball games, birthday parties, day to day events). I've watched video from the Sony and was impressed by the clarity (much better than the old Canon ZR600). We would like to keep the price around $400 or under and are open to any suggestions. Thanks in advance!
