There is no "better" but I'll try to hit on some key points. The S95 is smaller (XZ-1 won't fit in a regular pocket) and has slightly better out-of-camera JPEGs, due to Oly's somewhat heavy-handed noise reduction in the higher ISO range. The NR is likely an effort to compensate for the slightly noisier Panasonic sensor used in the XZ-1 (S95 uses a Sony sensor I believe). The Oly has a brighter lens throughout the focal range (S95 lens shuts down quick as you zoom). The Oly also has a hotshoe and built-in ND filter. The Oly does not have AE/AF lock, whereas the S95 does. For me, I would (and did) choose the S95 if size was a crucial factor. If I was going to do a lot of low light shooting, I would probably choose the XZ-1 due to its brighter lens throughout the focal range.

Both are excellent P&S cams. There are no successors. Both are current models.

Quick note, I think the XZ-1 does have ae/af lock, but you can't lock them independently.

Hi,

Both P&S cameras are good. It all boils down to what are the key factors for you.
I would go to a store and touch, feel, and use both.
Size of camera, how it fits in your hand, are the button and control layouts intuitive to you. Are the menus easy to understand, use, and find things.
Does the zoom range meet your needs.

Are you going to do a lot of low light or no flash shooting. Do you want total control over the camera, or do you just want to turn on the camera, set it to auto and fire away.

Those are the things that I would be thinking of when going to a store and evaluating these two.

In the meantime, if you want to read a pretty fair hands on review. Here is one recently done by Michael Reichmann of Luminous Landscape.
Mr. Reichman is no fanboy of Olympus equipment.
